Emma Watson Unveils Gender Equality Initiative in Davos

"Women share this planet 50/50, and they are under-represented, their potential astonishingly untapped."

Emma Watson continued her fight against sexism as the Global Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women. At the World Economic Forum in Davos on Friday, she announced a new yearlong initiative called HeForShe's IMPACT 10X10X10.

The plan asks for governments, companies and universities to step in and work together to "bring an end to the persisting inequalities faced by women and girls globally."

Watson outlined the gender equality initiative in her speech, talking about the overwhelming response she received when she first launched HeForShe with a powerful speech in New York City last September. While some people proved just how necessary this conversation is by threatening her for defending women, she was largely celebrated for her passionate words.

"I've been stunned by the amount of men in my life that have contacted me since my speech to tell me to keep going and that they want to make sure that their daughters will still be alive to see a world where women have power and equality, economically and politically," said the actress.

"It is my belief that there is a greater understanding than ever that women need to be equal participants in our homes, in our societies, in our governments and in our work places," added Watson. "They know that the world is being held back in every way, because they are not. Women share this planet 50/50, and they are under-represented, their potential astonishingly untapped."
