Emmys 2011: 'Modern Family's' Ty Burrell: '1,000 Actors Deserve' Nom 'More Than I Do'
Plus, Sofia Vergara and Eric Stonestreet react to the show’s 17 nominations.
Modern Family was the top comedy series nominated with 17, but unlike last year, all six adult actors -- including Ed O'Neill -- were recognized in the supporting categories.
"I'm sort of stunned," Ty Burrell told The Hollywood Reporter after receiving his second supporting actor in a comedy series nomination. "I never imagined that we could all be nominated. It was just really thrilling. It's a really special day for the show."
But did he believe he ultimately deserved the nomination? "I feel like there are 1,000 actors who deserve it more than I do," Burrell, who plays Phil Dunphy on the ABC comedy, said of his own personal nomination.
"It just never felt right to be there without Ed [O'Neill]," Burrell added, referring to last year's surprise snub for his Modern Family co-star.
Burrell, who was in "denial about what day was nomination day," found out early Thursday morning after his wife woke him up telling him his phone was ringing, and celebrated his Emmy nomination the same way he did last year. "It's a good luck omen. My daughter woke up and I changed her poopy diaper," Burrell said. "This is two years in a row."
Burrell believed that Parks and Recreation's supporting player Nick Offerman, however, should've been included in the category. "I've been watching Parks and Recreation recently and I think he's a phenomenal actor," he said. "There are so many [actors], it's inevitable [to be left out]."
Co-star Sofia Vergara was ecstatic after finding out she had scored her second supporting actress nomination. "I can't believe how many people love Gloria now," she told THR in her thick Colombian accent.
Vergara, who was "jetlagged" from doing press for upcoming movie The Smurfs, was sleeping when her manager called her on the phone to tell her the good news.
Co-star Eric Stonestreet, who won the supporting actor Emmy last year, issued a statement, saying: “I am so proud for the show, I am so proud for the cast, and I am truly humbled and honored to be nominated once again. This is a special moment to be part of something as universally appreciated as the show is, and it’s a testament to our writers, cast and crew.”
