Endemol acquires stake in Russian prodco
WeiT Media headed up by Russian producer Timur WeinsteinLONDON -- Endemol continued its global push into scripted production Monday, announcing the acquisition of a controlling stake in Russian prodco WeiT Media, which currently has a slate of 16 local scripted projects including sitcoms, soap operas and documentary series for leading Russian broadcasters as well as a full-length animated movie and two feature films.
Under the deal, WeiT Media, headed up by one of Russia's most successful producers, Timur Weinstein, will become producer of Endemol's scripted and entertainment formats in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan, operating separately from the reality producer's existing participation TV and interactive operation Endemol Moscow.
Founded in August 2009, WeiT Media focuses on drama, animation and entertainment, WeiT Ship Films produces feature movies, WeiT Island Production, specializes in documentaries and TV movies and WeiT Falcon Content is a dedicated division focused on the development of digital content.
"This partnership will considerably expand our regional business, establishing Endemol as a major local producer of scripted programming and allowing us to bring production expertise and new opportunities to numerous CIS countries," said Marina Williams, CEO of Central and Eastern European operations at Endemol Group.
