Endemol Buys 'The Fall' Producer Artists Studio
The Welsh-based studio also produced ABC's "Combat Hospital" and drama "Thorne" for Sky U.K.
Reality-TV giant Endemol continues to expand into the scripted space with the acquisition, announced Monday, of Welsh drama production house Artists Studio, whose credits include the crime procedural The Fall, featuring Gillian Anderson.
Endemol also acquired sister company Far Moor Media, which does executive production packaging for big-budget international dramas and has recently worked on Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, a co-production between BBC One and BBC America. Artists Studio will be merged with Endemol U.K.
The Fall has been a major hit on BBC Two, where it averaged more than 4 million viewers per episode for its first series run. Artists Studio kicks off production on The Fall's second season later this year.
Endemol will handle worldwide distribution on the second season under the conditions of the takeover. The British shingle will become a part of the Endemol U.K. banner.
Set up in 2009 by ex-Box TV executives Gub Neal, Justin Thomson-Glover and Patrick Irwin, Artists Studio also co-produced (with Canada's Sienna Films and Look Out Productions) the medical drama Combat Hospital, which aired on ABC. Other credits include the Sky U.K. series Thorne and event miniseries Titanic: Blood and Steel.
