Fox Networks Group Europe & Africa has locked down its first scripted commission for the region, teaming with Rogue creator Matthew Parkhill and American Odyssey producer Simon Maxwell.

The Nine, currently a working title, is an espionage thriller centering on a ex-spy brought back into the game following the death of his son and thrown into a major conspiracy spread across the U.K., U.S., France and the Middle East.

Parkhill, Maxwell and Stephen Thompson will write the series, which is being produced by Emmy-winning TV veteran Hilary Bevan Jones (Roald Dahl's Esio Trot, State of Play, The Escape Artist) and Tom Nash (Restless, Esio Trot, Partners in Crime) for their U.K. banner Endor Productions, part of the Red Arrow Group.

Parkhill, who also penned the pilot, will serve as showrunner and direct four of the eight episodes and exec produce alongside Maxwell, Bevan Jones, lan Greenspan of 6 Degree Media (Donnie Brasco, High Fidelity) and Helen Flint of Little Island Productions (Close to the Enemy). Jeff Ford, FNG Europe and Asia's senior vp content development, and Sara Johnson, vp scripted drama, commissioned The Nine and will serve as exec producers for Fox Networks Group, Europe & Africa.

"Fox Networks Group, with their ambitious global reach, is the perfect partner for this drama," said Bevan Jones. "We will be filming on location in Morocco, using the expertise of producer Khadija Alami (The Night Manager, Tyrant) to bring this visceral story to the screen."

Fox plans to air the 8 x 60 series in over 50 European and African countries, with production set to kick off in early 2017 and Fox Networks Group Content & Distribution holding the global distribution rights.

"Following the huge success we’ve had with our Fox global content, we made a commitment to develop drama for this region specifically, that has the potential to be a success worldwide," said Ford.

“Matthew and Simon have created a smart, modern, thrilling and mainstream new drama, and The Nine is the perfect example of quality drama being created in Europe," added Johnson.
