EU moves to reduce copyright theft

ISPs must warn against piracy, culture ministers say

BRUSSELS -- Internet service providers must actively warn customers that Internet piracy is illegal and that they could face legal action if caught ripping pirate material, EU audiovisual and culture ministers have said.

Meeting in Versailles, outside Paris, the ministers said ISPs must take some responsibility for curbing Internet piracy.

EU Information Society and Media Commissioner Viviane Reding said the copyright warning would come when ISPs sign contracts with clients.
