COLOGNE -- The European Film Academy will launch a new awards category at this year's European Film Awards, honoring, for the first time, the best in European comedy.

A special committee of European film professionals will pick three nominees for the inaugural European Comedy award. The 2,800 members of the European Film Academy will vote on the winner, who will be announced at the 26th EFAs in Berlin December 7.

For its next edition, the EFAs will also bring back the technical categories of European Sound Designer and European Costume Designer. As with the other tech categories of cinematography, editing, production design and film score, a seven member jury, not the academy as a whole, will vote on the winners.

All other categories, including the top award of Best European Film, will be decided by European Film Academy members.
