Exhibitor Cinepolis Cracks Mexico's VOD Market
The launch means more competition for Netflix.
MEXICO CITY -- Theater chain giant Cinepolis has launched streaming service Klic, a VOD movie platform that will go head to head with Netflix here in Mexico.
Cinepolis Klic charges 89 pesos (about $7.40) a month, slightly less than Netflix, but Netflix's reach extends throughout Latin America, whereas Klic will focus strictly on the Mexican market for now. The VOD service also offer rentals ranging from about $2 to $4; among the hundreds of commercial titles available are Oscar winners Life of Pi and Argo.
Cinepolis Klic joins a growing list of VOD competitors in Mexico. In addition to taking on top rival Netflix, it will go up against TotalMovie, a Televisa-TV Azteca joint venture; ClaroVideo, an upstart VOD platform offered by telecom monopoly America Movil; iTunes; and the Walmart-owned Vudu. Cinepolis CEO Alejandro Ramirez expects Klic to have about 500,000 subscribers in two years.
With 3,100-plus screens, Cinepolis ranks among the world's leading exhibitors. The family-run business (Mexico's top theater circuit) has enjoyed recent success expanding into new territories such as Brazil, India and the U.S, where it operates luxury cinemas in Southern California.
Additionally, Cinepolis runs a theatrical distribution unit for documentary films and just this month it announced it had purchased five Imax theaters for existing multiplexes.
