Facebook's Watch Debuts Live Dating Series With Host Shannon Boodram (Exclusive)

'Make Up or Break Up' will let viewers react in real time as couples decide whether to stay together or go their separate ways.

Facebook's Watch is giving the relationship status a reality-show spin.

The social network on Thursday will bow reality series Make Up or Break Up, which will give users the chance to weigh in on whether a couple should stay together or go their separate ways. The six-episode series will be hosted by online influencer Shannon Boodram, aka Shan Boody, who has more than 300,000 social media followers for her dispatches on human sexuality. 

The project, one of a handful of series that Facebook has funded as it seeks to jump-start the video ecosystem within its new Watch tab, hails from Thumb Candy Media, with executive producer Corin Nelson serving as showrunner. 

"Viewers of traditional dating shows get very invested in a couple's relationship, but they can't actually weigh in on whether or not they should stay together, because the show is taped," says Thumb Candy principal Brien Meagher. "Because we're live, all of Facebook can help influence the couple's decision in real time."

The Watch tab began rolling out as a new destination for video viewing in August and is now widely available to Facebook users in the U.S. Make Up or Break Up is one of the shows that the social network has funded to bring to the platform, which also features a mix of various shortform series. Other funded projects include docuseries Humans of New York, competition series Last State Standing and scripted comedy Loosely Exactly Nicole, which Facebook plans to revive after it aired one season on MTV. 

Rhett Bachner, principal at Thumb Candy, says that a live dating series would be harder to pull off on a traditional TV network because "you run into significant time zone issues when trying to produce live for multiple coasts." He adds, "The interactivity opportunity here is just extraordinary given the size of the Facebook community, and creatively they want us to take risks at every turn, which is really exciting for us." 

Meagher and Bachner created Thumb Candy in partnership with Core Media Group, which owns American Idol producer 19 Entertainment, as the digital division of their B-17 Entertainment, a producer of such projects as MTV's Broke A$$ Game Show. The studio is also launching a fashion-themed competition series, Nail the Look, on Snapchat Discover.  

Make Up or Break Up will stream everything Thursday on Facebook's Watch. It premieres Thursday, Sept. 7 at 8 p.m. ET.
