'Family' pilot marks reunion
EmptyTNT has given the green light to "Family Man," a one-hour drama pilot starring William H. Macy and executive produced by "Hairspray" producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron.
"Family," from Sony Pictures TV and Zadan and Meron's Storyline Entertainment, is described as a drama with witty overtones. It will star Macy as the unlikely criminal Todd Becker -- a respected father of three, upright citizen and advice-dispensing pillar of his community by day and the leader of a somewhat dysfunctional, bickering gang of burglars by night.
Macy and his writing partner Steven Schachter penned the script, and Schachter is set to direct. The two are exec producing with Zadan and Meron.
Macy and Schachter have a long history with TNT. The 2002 TNT telefilm "Door to Door," which was written by the duo, starred Macy and was helmed by Schachter. It earned the pair Emmys for their script, Macy's performance and Schachter's directing. Macy also landed Emmy noms for starring in and producing the 2005 TNT telefilm "The Wool Cap."
If "Family" goes to series, Macy will join his "Door" co-star Kyra Sedgwick, who headlines TNT's red-hot cop drama "The Closer" on the network's schedule.
"Family" is the second pilot greenlighted this year by TNT. It joins the untitled Steven Bochco legal drama, which recently locked its cast led by Jane Kaczmarek and Mark-Paul Gosselaar (HR 8/1).
The pilot pickup for "Family" comes on the heels of the strong debut for TNT's new drama series "Saving Grace," starring Holly Hunter, as well as another record-breaking season kickoff for "Closer."
The network has had less success with male-centered dramas, with the Treat Williams starrer "Heartland" having a hard time catching on.
"Family" marks the fifth pilot pickup for SPT in the past week, following cast-contingent orders for comedy "My Best Friend's Girl" at CBS, cop drama "SIS" for Spike TV, female detective drama "Danny Fricke" for A&E and a full-fledged order for drama "Family Practice" at Lifetime.
