Fans tune in to Radiohead

Band's 2nd No. 1; 'Juno' bows big

With U.S. fans finally able to touch the "In Rainbows" CD, Radiohead returns to the top of the Billboard 200 for the first time since 2000.

The album's sales of 122,000 units — a rather humble debut tally for the popular veteran act — is somewhat misleading. The revered British band's seventh studio set was available for several weeks in the fall as a "name your own price" download exclusively from Radiohead.com, and sales figures for that revolutionary experiment have not been released.

Also working against the album's numbers for the week ending Jan. 6 were those pesky street-date violations. It moves to the top spot having prematurely debuted at No. 156 last week. That marks the biggest jump the chart has seen since April 1997, when the Notorious B.I.G.'s "Life After Death" rocketed from No. 176 to No. 1 after it too suffered an early debut because of street-date transgressions.

"In Rainbows" marks Radiohead's fourth consecutive record to hit the top three on the Billboard 200 but only its second No. 1. "Kid A" debuted in the top spot in 2000 with 207,000 units sold.

The other big chart news this week is the stunning No. 8 debut of the soundtrack to Fox Searchlight's "Juno."

The multiple-artist album was available only as a digital download until Tuesday, when the CD arrived in stores. However, street-date violations of the physical configuration last week pushed the album onto the big chart a week early.

Of the set's 38,000 sold last week, digital retailers accounted for 99% of the total. "Juno" bowed digitally Dec. 11 and had sold 37,000 downloads in its first three weeks.

Billboard's Jonathan Cohen and Keith Caulfield contributed to this report.
