The 16th edition of the genre film festival in July 2012 will launch the Frontières co-production market to get filmmakers from Canada working with colleagues in the U.S., Europe, Scandinavia and Australia.

The inaugural market will present 12 genre projects to international producers, sales agents and distributors so they can get off the drawing board and into production.

“Frontières will further Fantasia’s position as one of the vanguard film festivals of the world by contributing to the development of new genre film works and the fostering of co-production relationships for Canada,” Stephanie Trepanier, Fantasia market director, said. 

Other co-production markets already specialize in genre cinema, with the Network of Asian Fantastic Films market at the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival helping get Asian genre films to market, while the rival Baltic Event Film and Co-Production Market at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival focuses on bringing together filmmakers from Scandinavia and eastern Europe, including Russia.

Fantasia is looking to broaden its co-production market to forge cutting-edge genre filmmaking worldwide.

Frontières will be held from July 26 -29, 2012, alongside the Fantasia Festival in Montreal.
