'Fantastic Mr. Fox' to open AFI Fest

The stop-motion animated feature is from Wes Anderson

Wes Anderson's stop-motion animated feature "Fantastic Mr. Fox" has been selected as the AFI Festival's opening-night gala film presentation.

The 20th Century Fox film will get its North American premiere with a fest screening at Grauman's Chinese Theatre on Oct. 30.

"Fox" features the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Wally Wolodarsky, Eric Anderson, Michael Gambon, Willem Dafoe, Owen Wilson and Jarvis Cocker. The screenplay is by Anderson and Noah Baumbach, and its music was composed and conducted by Alexandre Desplat. The film was produced by Allison Abbate, Scott Rudin, Anderson and Jeremy Dawson.

Fox unspools "Fox" in limited release on Nov. 13, with an expansion into wide distribution set for Nov. 25.

"Wes Anderson is an American original," AFI chief Bob Gazzale said. "It is a distinct honor for the American Film Institute to shine a proper light on his extraordinary talents by premiering his latest gift to the nation and to the world."
