Fifth year on top for Fox News, but cable rivals gain

Fox News marked its fifth anniversary on top of the cable ratings as it and the two other cable news channels, CNN and MSNBC, also showed increases in primetime.

Fox News' primetime adults 25-54 viewership was up 22% to 389,000 in January, compared with the same frame last year, according to Nielsen Media Research. It also was up 8% in primetime viewership to 1.6 million viewers.

At the same time, CNN and MSNBC were both up: CNN jumped 12% to 809,000 viewers (up 22% to 260,000 in the demo), and MSNBC was up 52% to 530,000 (up 45% in the demo) year-over-year.

Fox News Channel was down 3% in total-day viewership with 874,000, as CNN was up 14% to 521,000; MSNBC was up 39% to 530,000.
