Nanni Moretti's hiatus from directing is coming to an end after more than two years. The Roman auteur said last year that he would take a break from making films while he guided the Turin Film Festival. But on Friday, he said that he was hard at work on a new film with Federica Pontremoli and Francesco Piccolo, both of whom shared co-writing credits with Moretti on his last film, "Il Caimano."
Maple, Leigh get 'Lucky'
Canadian distributor Maple Pictures has picked up domestic rights to the Mike Leigh comedy "Happy-Go-Lucky" from Miramax. The sale has prompted speculation that Maple is set to sign a Canadian distribution deal with Miramax after the U.S. studio did not renew its agreement with Alliance Films when it expired Dec. 31. Representatives at Miramax were not available for comment.
IMAX, HOYTS PACT
Imax has signed a joint- venture agreement with Australia's Hoyts Cinemas chain to install four digital theaters in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney by 2009. Toronto-based Imax and Hoyts will share the cost and revenue from the four super-sized theaters, each of which will feature a digital projection system, with the first three to open by December.
HUdson to the nines
Kate Hudson is joining the cast of Rob Marshall's film adaptation of the Broadway musical "Nine" in the role of the American fashion journalist Stephanie. Hudson joins a cast toplined by Daniel Day-Lewis and Marion Cotillard in the Weinstein Co.-Relativity Media-financed musical.
