EmptyASC FETES GREEN
Jack Green, who collaborated with Clint Eastwood on films like "Unforgiven," will receive the American Society of Cinematographers 2009 lifetime achievement award. Green earned an Oscar nomination for lensing "Unforgiven." The 23rd annual ASC Outstanding Achievement Awards will be held Feb. 15 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Century City.
POSTHUMOUS ADG NODS
The Art Directors Guild will induct five production designers into its Hall of Fame next year. The posthumous honors will go to John Meehan, Ted Haworth, Mac Johnson, Romain Johnston and Harold Michelseon. The inductees will be recognized at the guild's 13th annual Excellence in Production Design Awards ceremony Feb. 14 in Beverly Hills.
'SOLOIST' PLAYS AFI
Joe Wright's "The Soloist," starring Robert Downey Jr. as Los Angeles Times journalist Steve Lopez and Jamie Foxx as a down-on-his-luck music prodigy, will serve as AFI Fest 2008's opening-night film Oct. 30 at the ArcLight Hollywood's Cinerama Dome. The film, from DreamWorks and Universal, will be released Nov. 21.
PALM SPRINGS SETS NODS
Producers Jennifer and Suzanne Todd, actress Donna Mills, philanthropist and theater owner Rozene Supple and actress/talk show host Pattie Daly Caruso will be honored at the Palm Springs Women in Film and Television's inaugural Broken Glass Awards on Nov. 7 at the Hyatt Grand Champions in Indian Wells, Calif.
Film London, with backing from the U.K. Film Council and Skillset, is pumping £100,000 ($186,000) into a two-year funding and training program dubbed "The New Black" that will bolster the theatrical exhibition market for movies from black filmmakers and provide black film exhibitors with financial support to market and publicize their events.
FOCUS ON AFRICA
South Africa's Jenna Bass and Jan-Hendrik Beetge, Rwanda's Edouard Bamporiki, Senegal's Dyana Gaye and Kenya's Wanuri Kahiu have each been awarded $10,000 by Focus Features' Africa First Program to make their own short films.
