The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has published a new book, "Douglas Fairbanks," exploring the life and career of the film star. Authored by Jeffrey Vance with Tony Maietta — and Robert Cushman as photo editor — the book showcases more than 200 images, some unseen for more than 75 years. Vance will sign copies of the book following a screening of "Douglas Fairbanks as The Gaucho" on Thursday at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
Meanwhile, the Academy will present the East Coast premiere of the digitally restored print of Akira Kurosawa's "Rashomon" on Nov. 17 at the Academy Theater in New York. The film was restored by the Academy Film Archive in association with the Kadokawa Culture Promotion Foundation and the Film Foundation.
SPC'S GOT THE 'POWER'
Sony Pictures Classics has acquired North American and Latin American rights to the R&B star-filled rockumentary "Soul Power" on the eve of its AFM market debut. Submarine Entertainment negotiated the deal with SPC and sold rights in other territories to Celluloid Dreams, which is repping the film at AFM.
Premiere Props will host a special holiday auction of movie props Saturday. Details: premiereprops.com.
