HOWARD HONORED

The 20th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival will honor Ron Howard with the Director's Lifetime Achievement Award on Jan. 6, with a special focus on his latest film, "Frost/Nixon," and his 50th anniversary in the industry.

ROURKE ON RIVIERA

The 24th annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival will honor Mickey Rourke with its American Riviera Award on Jan. 30 at the Arlington Theater in Santa Barbara. Rourke stars in "The Wrestler," which Fox Searchlight opens Dec. 17.

HOME WORKS

A Place Called Home, a nonprofit providing at-risk youth with educational opportunities, will present its 15th annual Gala for the Children on Thursday at the Beverly Hilton. Honorees include Universal president of marketing and distribution Adam Fogelson, Herbalife chairman and CEO Michael Johnson and Sheila and John Bryant, the founder, chairman and CEO of Operation HOPE.

AFM ATTENDEEs DIP

The number of buyers attending the American Film Market fell 6% this year — from 1,628 to 1,527 — with the biggest drop coming among North American buyers, who were down 14%.
