First U.S.-China Film and TV Expo in L.A. to Take Place in September
Organizers say it will be the first and biggest-ever showcase of the dual film and TV industries of the U.S.
The inaugural U.S.-China Film and TV Industry UCFTI Expo, aimed at boosting cooperation between the U.S. and China film industries, will take place Sept. 15 and 16 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
The Expo, which was originally slated to take place in March but was postponed because it conflicted with China’s annual parliament, the National People’s Congress, will unite U.S. filmmakers with Chinese dignitaries to discuss areas including project financing, government regulations, local production teams, foreign film quotas and more.
China is the world’s second largest film market, with $3.6 billion in receipts last year, and is Hollywood’s biggest overseas market.
However, China remains a difficult regulatory environment for Hollywood studios to navigate, with a quota of 34 imported movies on a revenue-share basis.
“Bypassing the film quota” is one of the areas covered in the panels planned for the Expo, as is project financing, development, state regulations, navigating and structuring deals with Chinese and American partners, investors and studios, communication with local production teams and tips from major players in traditional and digital distribution in China.
“Both the U.S. and China boast thriving film and television industries but do not necessarily take advantage of each other’s strengths and resources,” said Bianca Chen, a filmmaker and CEO of the UCFTI Expo.
“In 2012, China became the world’s second largest movie market by total box office, which makes this the perfect time for U.S. and China industry leaders to collaborate and leverage this success for both media powerhouses,” said Chen.
She said the aim of the Expo was to provide a platform for both countries’ industry players to build professional ties and encourage job creation, creative sharing and learning.
This Expo also allows industry leaders to explore new financing avenues, injecting money into Hollywood.
Half of the exhibitors will be from China while the other half will be from the U.S. Categories will include film and television production equipment, display and projection equipment, mobile media, transmission systems, management and information systems, post-production, audio equipment and radio equipment.
The event will feature a host of state media organizations, including the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film & TV, Shanghai Media Group, the Shanghai Broadcasting & Television Producers Association and the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Radio and Television.
Also taking part will be Beijing GoldAV Company and the Beijing International Film Festival.
The UCFTI Expo will address financing opportunities for future projects, and will include panels hosted by key experts from both countries, addressing some of the main questions industry players have about working with China.
Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa launched the expo at an event in Beijing last September.
