Focus: Laughter turns to tears

Empty

Focus Features kept the turnstiles busy with such comedies from its Rogue genre label as "Hot Fuzz" and the martial arts goof "Balls of Fury" while it readied a more upscale slate of fall releases. With $17.1 million in its account, the Russian mob tale "Eastern Promises" has picked up a SAG nomination for Viggo Mortensen. And both the 1960s set "Talk to Me" with Don Cheadle and Ang Lee's "Lust, Caution" -- which Focus CEO James Schamus produced and co-wrote -- picked up multiple Spirit Awards, even if they have been met with resistance at the boxoffice. Now, the spotlight is on Joe Wright's drama "Atonement," starring Keira Knightley and James McAvoy, set to continue its expansion on the strength of its seven Golden Globe nominations and hoped-for Oscar attention.
