Former Adweek exec Andrew Jaffe dies

Launched conferences division at mag; oversaw Clio Awards

Andrew Jaffe, who launched the conferences division at Adweek magazine and oversaw the Clio Awards, died Feb. 26 in Norwalk, Conn., after a 10-year battle with multiple myeloma. He was 71.

In 1986, Jaffe was hired by Adweek as an editor in Atlanta, then moved to New York as editorial director for six of the magazine's editions. He became a vp in 1992 and created the conference division, and five years later he engineered Adweek's acquisition of the Clios. He oversaw the awards, which honoring creative advertising in package design, print, radio and television, for six years.

Jaffe retired from Adweek in 2003 and set up Compass Consulting in Norwalk, where his clients included One Show Entertainment, the first awards show for branded entertainment. He served as chairman of the Neal Awards for business journalism and authored a book, "Casting for Big Ideas," published in 2003.

Jaffe served on the board of the Brandcenter at Virginia Commonwealth University, which offers a master degree in creative advertising and has a program for mid-career advertising professionals.

Jaffe attended Pomona College, served in the U.S. Army and graduated from the Columbia University School of Journalism, then began his career as a newsman with the Associated Press. He left for Newsweek, where he worked in domestic bureaus and as a foreign correspondent in Africa. In 1977, he became business editor of the Los Angeles Herald Examiner.

Jaffe is survived by his wife, Eileen Ast, a communications executive; his son Christopher, daughter-in-law Katie and granddaughter Stella; stepson Nicholas Ast; brothers, Bruce, a photographer in New York, and Steve, a crisis PR expert in Beverly Hills; and a sister-in-law, actress Susan Blakely.

The family requests that contributions be made to the Andrew Jaffe Scholarship Fund at Virginia Commonwealth University or to the Whittingham Cancer Center at Norwalk Hospital. Memorial services are pending.
