Fortissimo Films has acquired the global sales rights to the dystopic drama The White King.

Adapted from the award-winning novel by Hungarian novelist Gyorgy Dragoman, which has been published in 30 languages, the film is co-directed and co-written by real-life couple Alex Helfrecht and Jorg Tittel. The film is produced by Oiffy, Philip Munger and Teun Hilte.

Shot in Hungary, the English-language film tells the story of an isolated small country in the not-too-distant future where the autocratic regime brutalizes its youth, incarcerates its citizens at will and spies on its citizens' every move using military might, drones and remote cameras.

The film stars newcomer Lorenzo Allchurch as a 12-year-old whose father was imprisoned, and he and his mother, played by model-turned-actress Agyness Deyn, are labeled traitors. Jonathan Pryce, Greta Scacchi, Fiona Shaw, Clare-Hope Ashitey and Olafur Darri Olafsson also star in the film.

The White King will be presented to buyers during the Cannes Film Festival, where exclusive footage will be shown. The film is now in postproduction and is expected to have its world premiere at an international film festival this year.
