Fortissimo Films to be Honored for the Promotion of Asian Cinema
Award to be presented by the 5th Asian Film Awards, organized by the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society.
HONG KONG -- Fortissimo Films will be the recipient for the special award for "The Promotion of Asian Cinema" presented by the 5th Asian Film Awards (AFA), organized by the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society.
A program of films from Fortissimo will also be presented as a sidebar at the upcoming Hong Kong International Film Festival.
This year the AFA has established four new special awards in addition to the honors in fourteen categories, which include Award for Promotion of Asian Cinema, Lifetime Achievement Awards, Awards for Outstanding Contribution to Asian Cinema, and Award for 2010 Top-Grossing Film.
The company was recognized for bringing Asian films to the international market, and for strengthening Hong Kong's position as a hub of Asian cinema. It has distributed such diverse Asian fare as the Philippines's Serbis by Brillante Mendoza, Taiwan's I Don't Want to Sleep Alone by Tsai Ming-liang, Japan's Norwegian Wood by Tran Anh Hung, Thailand's Syndromes and a Century by Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Hong Kong's Dream Home by Pang Ho-cheung.
The company continues a longtime relationship with Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai, representing Wong's Jet Tone library and co-producing the director's 2046and the forthcoming Grandmaster.
Fortissimo chairman Michael Werner will receive the award at the AFA ceremony on March 21.
The company's late founder Wouter Barendercht was also instrumental in establishing the Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF), and a Wouter Barendercht Award was set up in his memory since his passing in 2009.
