Fox 2000 Lands Hot 'Hair Wars' Movie From 'Fresh Off the Boat' Showrunner (Exclusive)
Nahnatchka Khan will write the script while 'Pitch Perfect' helmer Jason Moore will direct and produce.
Fox 2000 is the champion of Hair Wars.
After a heated bidding war erupted over a pitch called Hair Wars, the studio has landed the rights to the film, with Fresh Off the Boat Nahnatchka Khan writing the script and Pitch Perfect helmer Jason Moore attached to direct.
The story seems like a good fit for Moore, who made his directorial debut with the 2012 musical hit. It's based on a real competition where hair salons face off. Sculptural hair is shown off through song and dance numbers as part of the competition. Sources say the pitch calls for diverse leads and the story explores identity. Moore will also produce Hair Wars.
Khan is the creator and showrunner of ABC’s his series Fresh Off the Boat, which centers on a Taiwanese family living in the U.S. in the ‘90s and stars Randall Park and Constance Wu. The series has been praised for bringing more diversity to TV, and has been renewed for a third season. She previously worked on American Dad! and created comedy Don't Trust the B— in Apartment 23. She's repped by WME.
After helming Pitch Perfect (a hit for Universal that's earned $115.4 million worldwide), Moore directed Sisters starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. He's already in business with Fox 2000, selling a pitch to the studio in late 2015. He's repped by WME and LBI Entertainment.
