Fox hits the high o'seas: $1 billion
Empty20th Century Fox International became the second major overseas distributor to reach $1 billion in foreign boxoffice revenue this year, hitting the industry benchmark Sunday night.
Paramount Pictures International passed the coveted mark June 16.
Fox's achievement was fueled by "Horton Hears a Who!" ($140.6 million), "Jumper" ($134 million), "What Happens in Vegas" ($127.7 million), "Alvin and the Chipmunks" ($107 million in 2008 for a carry-over total of $142.1 million) and "The Happening" ($78.5 million to date).
Last year, for the first time in industry history, five of the six MPA companies topped $1 billion by the end of July; a sixth studio came aboard by the end of the year. (partialdiff)
