Mike Huckabee Criticizes Unwed Natalie Portman for Being Pregnant at Oscars
The former presidential candidate and Fox News pundit says she and other celebrities are presenting a "distorted image" of single motherhood.
Fox News Channel personality and former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee has attacked Natalie Portman and other Hollywood celebrities for glamorizing the idea of having children out of wedlock.
Portman is expecting her first child, with her choreographer fiancé Benjamin Millepied, whom she met on the set of Black Swan. The actress has been a constant presence on red carpets and in the media recently, with her Black Swan role earning her a slew of awards, including an Oscar at Sunday's Academy Awards ceremony.
Huckabee said Monday on radio's The Michael Medved Show that he believes she -- along with other pregnant, unwed celebrities and single mothers -- are sending the wrong message to the public.
"One of the things that's troubling is that people see a Natalie Portman or some other Hollywood starlet who boasts of, 'Hey look, you know, we're having children, we're not married, but we're having these children, and they're doing just fine,'" Huckabee said, as picked up by MediaMatters.org.
Huckabee, who hosts the Fox News talk show Huckabee, argued that most single mothers don't have the same lifestyle and resources as celebrities.
"There aren't really a lot of single moms out there who are making millions of dollars every year for being in a movie," he said. "And I think it gives a distorted image. ... Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can't get a job, and if it weren't for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care. And that's the story that we're not seeing, and it's unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out-of-wedlock children."
Huckabee, former governor of Arkansas, was a Republican presidential candidate in 2008 and is a possible contender for 2012.
