Fox News riding high on Palin

Network outpaces rivals for McCain's vp announcement

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- It's still to be seen whether the pick of Sarah Palin as his running mate will help carry John McCain to the White House.

But the news of McCain's pick Friday boosted Fox News Channel's ratings.

Fox News was the first to break the news, at 10:35 a.m. ET Friday. A little less than two hours later, Fox News outpaced its rivals when Palin joined McCain at a campaign rally and introduction in Dayton, Ohio. It averaged an amazing 3.8 million viewers in the noon ET hour, Nielsen Media Research said Tuesday.

It was the highest ratings of the day, ahead of CNN's 1.9 million and MSNBC's 927,000. It won in the adults 25-54 demo too.

The ratings win continued through the evening with Fox News Channel's 3.5 million viewers to CNN's 1.7 million and MSNBC's 1.1 million.
