SYDNEY -- Pay TV operator Foxtel on Wednesday was awarded AUS$1 million ($800,000) after suing a Western Australian company it claimed was pirating its signal.

Foxtel took civil action against the Mod Shop, a technology business in Western Australia, over allegedly dealing in equipment, software and information to assist consumers in pirating the Foxtel signal.

In a federal court decision, Judge Siopis ruled that the Mod Shop activities were illegal and awarded damages to Foxtel. The judge awarded additional damages to deter other pirates.

Foxtel's civil suit preceded new federal government copyright laws, which took effect this year and include criminal sanctions for piracy.

"Piracy undermines industry investment by both the subscription television platforms and the channel providers and harms jobs growth and security," Foxtel chief executive Kim Williams said.
