Fremaux upped to Cannes general director
EmptyPARIS -- Festival de Cannes artistic director Thierry Fremaux has been promoted to general director, festival organizers revealed Monday.
He officially took the new title Aug. 9 with the support of the festival's administrative council and president Gilles Jacob in addition to France's cultural minister and minister of foreign affairs.
Fremaux, who joined the Festival de Cannes in 2000 after serving as director of the Lumiere Institute in Lyon, is only the fourth person to hold the general director title, following previous title holders Robert Favre-Le Bret, Maurice Bessy and Jacob.
"I'm happy to express my satisfaction in seeing the Administrative Council join me in nominating Thierry Fremaux," Jacob said. "A page is turned. After seven festivals as artistic drector ... he has my confidence and my support. This nomination allows us -- and this is my first objective -- to assure the future under the best conditions."
