FX Orders Late-Night Series from EP Chris Rock

FX is beefing up its commitment to late-night. The cable network said Wednesday that it has ordered six episodes of a new late-night series from executive producer Chris Rock.

The untitled project, starring political comic W. Kamau Bell, will premiere in the summer as a weekly half-hour series that will look at politics, pop culture, race, religion, media and sex.

It comes on the heels of the network's order of a similar six-episode order for a Russell Brand-fronted late-night series debuting in the spring as cable networks -- TBS with Conan O'Brien and Bravo with Andy Cohen -- turn more and more attention to late-night.

“The presentation pilot that Chris and Kamau shot was terrific,” said Nick Grad, executive vp original programming at FX. “Kamau is a tremendous young comedian who has a very smart and sharp take on life. Working with Chris will only bring out the best of his talents. This series, along with Russell Brand’s Strangely Uplifting, puts FX on really solid footing in the late-night arena.”

FX Productions is producing the series, with Rock, Bell and Chuck Sklar serving as executive producers.

“I think Kamau is one of the funniest guys out there," added Rock, "and I can't wait to work with the good people at FX."

Bell is founding member of comedy troupe Laughter Against the Machine and released a top-selling comedy album, Face Full of Flour, in 2010. His half-hour show, The W. Kamau Bell Curve: Ending Racism in About an Hour, earned critical praise in 2010 and 2011, earning him comparisons to Dave Chappelle.
