'Game of Thrones' Sets New On-Demand Record in Germany
More than 2.3 million fans call up episodes of the HBO fantasy hit on Sky Deutschland's on-demand service, more than double the number from last year.
Game of Thrones has set a new on-demand record for Germany, with pay-TV player Sky Deutschland recording 2.3 million viewers for the show on its on-demand streaming service Sky Go.
That's more than twice the 1 million GOT fans that streamed the show on Sky Go last year and a new record for the German market. The figure is even more impressive given that Sky Deutschland has a total subscriber base of just over 3.3 million.
Sky Deutschland is hoping its SVOD offering will help stave off online on-demand competition from Netflix, which will launch in Germany in September.
The Sky Go service lets subscribers watch films and series from Sky's lineup, among them HBO series such as True Detective and Veep and Netflix' own House of Cards, online or on mobile devices and tablets.
British pay-TV group BSkyB just closed a $9.1 billion deal to acquire 21st Century Fox's majority stake in Sky Deutschland, along with its 100 percent stake in Italian group Sky Italia.
