'Game of Thrones' TV Series Will Spoil the Books, Says Showrunner
"We’re kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place."
In a panel discussion at the Oxford Union, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss admitted that the TV show is going to spoil the plot of the book series.
"Luckily, we’ve been talking about this with George [R.R. Martin] for a long time, ever since we saw this could happen, and we know where things are heading," said Benioff. "And so we’ll eventually, basically, meet up at pretty much the same place where George is going; there might be a few deviations along the route, but we’re heading toward the same destination."
Author Martin has already told Benioff and Weiss how the book series will end. He recently announced he is skipping Comic-Con to finish writing the sixth book, The Winds of Winter. Martin has already said that in season five of the TV series, we will see surprising deaths that have not yet happened in the books.
"I kind of wish that there were some things we didn’t have to spoil, but we’re kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place," said Benioff, explaining that the show cannot go on a hiatus. "The show must go on…and that’s what we’re going to do."
