TOKYO -- Geneon Entertainment will distribute Universal Pictures' new DVD releases in Japan, the two companies announced Thursday.

The first release under the new arrangement will be "The Bourne Ultimatum," scheduled for March.

However, Universal Pictures Japan will continue to distribute all DVDs from the back catalog and television productions of Universal Pictures International Entertainment, including "Heroes," which is to debut on J:COM's Superdrama cable channel in October.

UPJ, under managing director Ghen Akiyama, will also continue to be responsible for the manufacturing and marketing of all DVDs.

"We are very honored to handle the distribution of Universal's DVDs in Japan and are fully committed to their successful release," Geneon president and CEO Sumio Kiga said.

"This deal will help us secure stronger and wider distribution in a very competitive Japanese marketplace and will complement our theatrical distribution deal with Toho-Towa," UPIE president Eddie Cunningham said.

Geneon is a leading distributor of music and video content, including anime, Japanese and Hollywood films. It is part of the Dentsu group, Japan's advertising powerhouse.
