George Lopez Prepping TV Return With Star Vehicle
The former ABC sitcom star is nearing a deal to create a sitcom that will follow Debmar-Mercury's now famous 10-90 episode model.
George Lopez may be heading back to TV.
The ABC sitcom star-turned-talk show host is nearing a deal with Debmar-Mercury, the Lionsgate subsidiary behind both the Tyler Perry series and Charlie Sheen's upcoming Anger Management, multiple sources confirm to The Hollywood Reporter.
The plan for a Lopez-centered sitcom, which has been brewing for many months, will operate like the others with an initial 10 episode order. If the project, which Lopez will co-create, hits a certain ratings threshold, an additional 90 will be ordered.
Those involved are banking on Lopez's unique Latino appeal, much as they've relied on Perry to lure an underserved African-American demo. While the comedian struggled to find a sizable enough audience in the competitive late night space, his family comedy ran from 2002 to 2007 and has performed particularly well in syndication. Debmar declined to comment.
Lopez is repped by CAA, 3 Arts and Rohner, Walerstein & Miloknay.
