George Lucas, Steven Spielberg Celebrate Opening of USC's Sumner Redstone Production Building

A slew of Hollywood bigwigs turned out Tuesday night to celebrate the opening of the Sumner M. Redstone Production Building at USC's School of Cinematic Arts.

USC president C. L. Max Nikias, SCA Board of Councilors chairman Frank Price and School of Cinematic Arts dean Elizabeth M. Daley also were present for the dedication of the state-of-the-art production facility, which houses two soundstages, dubbed Redstone 1 and Redstone 2.

"I've always said that content is king. It's the lord of the realm. It's the highest value in this industry," Redstone told the crowd. "USC has been instrumental in celebrating the type of talent that exemplifies this, and it's my sincere honor to be associated with this great school and to help to shape the future of this industry. I'm hoping that adding my name to the Redstone building will further the art of storytelling and that, within its walls, the Spielbergs and Lucases of tomorrow will continue to make magic.”

The Redstone Production Building, which is part of SCA’s new Cinematic Arts Complex, features 2,600 square feet of production space for use by the about 1,000 students from the school's various divisions who are studying production skills such as staging, lighting, directing, producing and forming and leading a crew.

The building is equipped with industry standard Strand dimming systems and Mole-Richardson lighting; floor lights, grip and electrical hardware; a Production Equipment Center; wooden stage floors; and soundproofing and soundproof utility doors, among many others features.

“George and I are very grateful to be here to dedicate the Sumner M. Redstone Production Building,”  Spielberg said at Tuesday's event. “I’ve known Sumner for a long time and one of the most important things to understand about him is his commitment to philanthropy. Sumner has exceeded everyone’s expectations when it comes to giving to the Trojan family.”

The building is part of a $10 million gift from Redstone, announced in January, that was earmarked to further the media creation education programs at the school, including the production building, 

Redstone, an active SCA supporter, delivered the school's commencement address in 2011.
