German Advertising Revenue Up In 2011

Ad revenue moves up 3.5% to $33 billion, with online advertising jumping 22.5%.

COLOGNE, Germany - The German advertising market continued to tick over nicely last year, with gross ad revenue increasing 3.5 percent over 2010 to $32.7 billion (€25.8 billion) according to figures released by Nielsen Media Research.

Online advertising got the biggest bump, jumping 22.5 per cent to $3.7 billion (€2.9 billion) while TV ad revenue inched up less than 2 percent to $14 billion (€11.1 billion).

But the final figures hide a underlying turbulence. Monthly ad sales figures fluctuated wildly during the year. The German ad market grew 10 percent year-on-year last January but just 2.2 percent in December 2011.

Nielsen managing director Ludger Wibbelt said continued uncertainty surrounding the Euro zone makes it difficult to make accurate growth forecast for 2012 though he did point to the London Olympics and the 2012 European Soccer Championships as potential motors driving German ad sales in the coming months.
