German Cabler Unitymedia Unscrambles Japanese Pay Channel for Ex Pats

BERLIN -- German cabler Unitymedia has unscrambled Japanese pay TV news channel JSTV to allow Japanese living in Germany to follow events in their homeland.

“We feel for all our customers who are worried about their family and friends in Japan,” said Unitymedia managing director Lutz Schuler, explaining the decision.

Germany's small Japanese community is largely based in and around Frankfurt and Dusseldorf, cities covered by Unitymedia's network. The cable group said it would broadcast JSTV unscrambled through March 21 but could extend the move beyond that depending on how the situation develops in Japan.
