Global Box Office: China Pays Off for Paramount's 'TMNT'; Fox Sets Foreign Record
And don't forget about 'Guardians of the Galaxy,' which is now the No. 2 title of the year
The Chinese box office has once again delivered big results for Hollywood.
Over the weekend, Paramount and Nickelodeon's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opened in China to $26.5 million, pushing the movie's international total to $244 million for a worldwide cume of $434.5 million. TMNT's total weekend earnings of $34.7 million put the Michael Bay-produced action movie atop the foreign chart.
Fox's YA film adaptation The Maze Runner also launched in China, taking in $13.7 million to jump the $200 million mark internationally and the $300 million mark globally (the film's gross through Sunday is a hearty $306.5 million).
Weekend earnings for Maze Runner, along with Gone Girl, pushed Fox's international box office revenue for the year past $3.25 billion, the top showing of all time for a Hollywood studio and surpassing the record set in 2011 by Paramount ($3.21 billion).
Fox — buoyed by a string of hits, including X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Fault in Our Stars and Dawn of the Planet of Apes — is also enjoying its best year ever at the domestic box office, boasting more than $1.5 billion in ticket sales
Thanks to a late run in China, as well as Italy, Disney and Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy has eclipsed fellow Disney tentpole Maleficent to become the No. 2 title of the year at the worldwide box office behind Transformers: Age of Extinction ($1.09 billion). Through Sunday, Guardians' total is $765 million, compared to $759 million for Maleficent. That includes a China cume of more than $94 million.
Disney's animated tentpole Big Hero 6 continued to please in Russia, where it opened early to take advantage of school holidays and has earned $10.3 million in its first nine days. In North America, Big Hero 6 opens Nov. 7 opposite Interstellar.
Elsewhere, Gone Girl and Sony's WWII movie Fury, starring Brad Pitt, stayed high up on the global box office chart.
Gone Girl's worldwide total through Sunday is $279.5 million, including $136.6 million in North America, a career best for David Fincher. The movie grossed $15.3 million overseas for the weekend, and $8.8 million domestically.
Nearing the $100 million mark, Fury took in $14.6 million overseas for a foreign total of $37.8 million, and $9.1 million domestically for a North American total of $60.4 million.
