Gloria Estefan Broadway Bio-Musical 'On Your Feet!' Casts Leads
The new musical begins previews Oct. 5 before its Nov. 5 opening at New York City's Marquis Theatre.
Broadway's Emilio and Gloria Estefan have been found.
Producers James L. Nederlander, Estefan Enterprises and Bernie Yuman announced Monday that On Your Feet! — the Broadway bio-musical based on the life and music of the seven-time Grammy-winning Latin pop sensation and the musician-producer-entrepreneur — will star Ana Villafane and Josh Segarra.
The new musical begins previews Oct. 5 before its Nov. 5 opening at New York City's Marquis Theatre, following its world premiere at Chicago's Oriental Theatre over the summer. It will be directed by Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots) and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys, Memphis), with a book by Alexander Dinelaris (Birdman, The Bodyguard Musical). Also featuring new music, the production follows the couple's journey from Cuba to Miami and superstardom, as they generate a string of smash albums and international hit songs, including "Conga," "1-2-3," "Music of My Heart" and "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You."
The two leads were announced after the show's international casting search via online auditions, plus two open casting calls held in New York City and the Estefans' home city of Miami.
Hired following a video audition, Villafane — a Cuban-American singer, dancer and actress from Miami who even attended the same high school as Gloria Estefan — will make her Broadway debut. Her film and television credits include Magic City Memoirs, Los Americans and Hiding, plus the upcoming Hulu series South Beach: Fever and the superhero feature Max Steel.
Segarra has been featured on the New York stage in Dogfight and Lysistrata Jones. His television credits includes Sirens, Chicago PD and The Electric Company, plus guest appearances in Homeland and The Following. He’ll also appear in the Judd Apatow comedy Trainwreck.
The cast will feature Andrea Burns as Gloria's mother, Alma Cuervo as Gloria’s grandmother, Alexandria Suarez as little Gloria and Noah Johnston as little Emilio. The ensemble includes Karmine Alers, Yassmin Alers, David Baida, Natalie Caruncho, Henry Gainza, Linedy Genao, Carlos E. Gonzalez, Nina Lafarga, Genny Lis Padilla, Omar Lopez-Cepero, Hector Maisonet, Marielys Molina, Felix Monge, Doreen Montalvo, Liz Ramos, Eliseo Roman, Luis Salgado, Marcos Santana, Martin Sola, Brett Sturgis, Eric Ulloa, Tanairi Vasquez and Lee Zarrett.
