Golden Globes: 'Gravity' Director Alfonso Cuaron Jokes About Thick Accent in Acceptance Speech
UPDATED: The Mexican director shared a funny story about Sandra Bullock mishearing him when he said "earpiece" -- not "herpes."
It was a big night for Gravity director Alfonso Cuaron, who won best director Sunday evening at the 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards, and the Mexican filmmaker joked about his thick accent when he went onstage to accept his award.
"This is for the hundreds of people that made this film possible," Cuaron said. "Because of my thick accent, they end up doing what they thought I said, not what I really said."
He also shared a funny story about the time Gravity star Sandra Bullock misheared Cuaron.
"I'm sure some of the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press will sympathize with this. Sandra, you are the most amazing collaborator," Cuaron said. "I want to thank you for not quitting when you thought that I have told you, 'Sandra, I'm going to give you herpes,' when I really meant to say, 'Sandra, I'm going to give you an earpiece.' "
Among the people the filmmaker thanked were George Clooney for his "generosity and … commitment," his son/co-writer Jonas Cuaron for his "inspiration," executive producer David Heyman, his agent Steve Rabineau and Warner Bros.
Cuaron ended his speech by thanking his mother: "And above all, muchas, muchas gracias a mi mama."
NBC's Sunday night telecast had its moments. Early on in the evening, presenters Jonah Hill and Margot Robbie dealt with a teleprompter issue and winner Jacqueline Bisset let a curse word slip during her lengthy acceptance speech.
UPDATE: An earlier version of the story inadvertently stated that Cuaron flubbed former Warner Bros. film chief Jeff Robinov's name during his acceptance speech.
