Golden Globes: Nobody's Laughing After 'The Martian' Wins Best Comedy
"When he ran out of oxygen I was on the floor."
The Martian won best picture, comedy during the Golden Globes Sunday night and a lot of people were perplexed.
The space odyssey received high praise from critics and was a massive box office success, but a comedy?
The film -- which comes out Tuesday on Blu-ray and DVD -- being entered in that category was no mistake.
"When you watch the movie with audiences, they laugh a lot. Between drama and comedy, there's always a unique tone, so with some drama, some comedy, we ended up picking it to go in the comedy category," producer Simon Kinberg previously told THR of the category selection.
Nonetheless, social media had a field day making fun of the awkward moment.
The Martian is much deserved as best comedy. When he ran out of oxygen I was on the floor.— Albert Brooks (@AlbertBrooks) January 11, 2016

It is a bold and exciting move to deem "The Martian" a comedy but I think all our efforts to avoid dying alone are essentially comic, so.— Sady Doyle (@sadydoyle) January 11, 2016
The Martian is as much of a comedy as Gravity was. #goldenglobes— The Sklar Brothers (@SklarBrothers) January 11, 2016
I don’t know why Ricky Gervais is having such a laugh about THE MARTIAN being a comedy. It was funnier than 80% of flicks I saw last year.— Sonny Bunch (@SonnyBunch) January 11, 2016
