Golden Globes and SAG Noms Decoded: Fun Facts, Crazy Stats and Snub Shockers
Netflix's summer breakout 'Stranger Things' and the quirky Viggo Mortensen starrer 'Captain Fantastic' are among the upstarts that elbowed their way in as the usual surprises (Emily Blunt!) and snubs (no SAG cast nomination for 'La La Land') reset the game.
Big media companies concerned with cord-cutting at least can count on the roughly 90 members of the HFPA. The group behind the Golden Globe Awards overwhelmingly favored cable with its 2017 TV nominations. Cable noms topped streaming and broadcast network mentions combined.
Meanwhile, the Screen Actors Guild Awards noms tilted more toward streamers Netflix and Amazon; those two attracted as many noms as did all the entire cable networks.
Broadcast brought up the rear, accounting for less than 19 percent of the total nominations from both groups.
THERE'S NO STOPPING THE MERC WITH A MOUTH
Deadpool is the first live-action superhero film in history to score a Golden Globe best picture nomination. One likely reason? It was a perfect fit for the musical/comedy category, an impossibility for Christopher Nolan's acclaimed Batman trilogy. Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds, nabbed a comedy best actor nom, also unusual for a superhero character. (Heath Ledger won for supporting actor — a category where the HFPA combines comedy and drama — for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight). Released in February, Deadpool earned $783 million at the global box office, making it the top-grossing R-rated title of all time (not accounting for inflation). — Pamela McClintock
SURPRISE NOMINEES AND SNUB SHOCKERS
Emily Blunt — Her SAG nomination for best drama actress for The Girl on the Train caused big gasps on Dec. 14.
Taraji P. Henson — She won a Globe last year for her role as Cookie in Empire and has been nominated for five SAG Awards, but she didn't receive an individual nom (she's part of Hidden Figures' SAG cast nom).
The Americans — After four seasons, in its first year as an Emmy nominee, the series finally got Globe love but was shut out by SAG.
Silence — Scorsese's passion project was denied any Globe or SAG Awards nominations.
Annette Bening, 20th Century Women — She's considered a shoo-in for an Oscar nom, which was validated by her Globe nom, yet she was passed over by SAG.
La La Land — It didn't make SAG's cast list (surprise: Captain Fantastic did). Only one pic in 21 years — 1995's Braveheart — has gone on to win the best pic Oscar without an ensemble nomination from SAG.
