Five Questions for Demi Lovato's Makeup Artist
Jill Powell gives us the scoop on the "Confident" singer's "sexy, sultry, seductive" look.
"The Grammys are the most coveted event in the music industry, and every artist wants to make a statement," says Demi Lovato’s makeup artist, Jill Powell. "This is one event where most attendees will step up their look or go out of their comfort zone, so I do feel like I have a bit more creative freedom compared to other events."
And nowhere was that more evident on Sunday than in Lovato’s myriad looks, from her red-carpet moment in a crocheted Julien Macdonald gown to when she took the stage in a '70s-inspired look for a Bee Gees tribute. Here, the artist talks secrets of the trade, and standout moments as she helped get the Grammy-nominated singer ready for the big day.
What was the inspiration behind Demi’s red-carpet makeup?
I was inspired by the combination of textures in Demi's amazing dress. The material was crocheted and accented by metallic gold rings. When I saw the dress, I immediately knew I wanted to do a metallic eye.
What was the focal point of the look?
Her sultry, bronzed, smoky eye. I wanted her eyes to stand out against her bronzed skin and neutral-toned dress. I used Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Intense Eyeshadow in Gold Blitz on her lids and also under her bottom lash line. I also used Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Fatal Attraction Quad Palette in Mirage to create depth and diffuse the look. I lined Demi's waterline with Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Waterproof Eyeliner in black, and lined the top of her lash line with Giorgio Armani Eye & Brow Maestro in Black and Wedge Wood. To finish off the look, I styled her lashes with Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Classico Mascara and feathered them outward to make her eyes pop.
How do you describe the overall effect?
Sexy, sultry, seductive.
What’s your secret to making Demi’s makeup last throughout her performance?
Prepping the skin properly and working in sheer layers. I used Giorgio Armani Prima products to prep her skin and ensure that it was hydrated but not overly saturated. Giorgio Armani Prima Skin Perfecter is an amazing moisturizer that hydrates but also helps absorb excess oil. I also applied Giorgio Armani Power Fabric foundation, which melts into the skin and evens out the skin tone, giving a skin-like finish. Because of the velvet-mate finish of the foundation, it lasts throughout the day and even performances.
What’s it like getting ready with Demi?
The energy today was amazing and it was just contagious. Everyone was so excited, the wardrobe was incredible, hair was amazing and I had so much fun creating the makeup looks. Demi jokes around so it always makes for a fun day.
