'Grand Budapest Hotel,' 'Monuments Men' Boost Studio Babelsberg Figures
Playing host to a series of high-profile features, including Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel, George Clooney's The Monuments Men and Brian Percival's The Book Thief, pushed Germany's Studio Babelsberg back into profit in 2013.
The studio, located outside Berlin, booked a profit of $1.1 million (€800,000) last year after a $9.2 million (€7.2 million) loss in 2012.
Other features that shot in Babelsberg in 2013 included Christophe Gans' Beauty and the Beast, The Voices from Marjane Satrapi (Persepolis) and Ken Scott's comedy Unfinished Business (aka Business or Pleasure).
Overall revenue at Studio Babelsberg was up some $30 million to $102 million (€75.1 million) last year.
The German studio is hoping for another strong year in 2014, helped by The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, which kicks off the Berlin leg of its shoot early next month.
