Green Day to Release First Disc in Album Trilogy This September
The pop-punk trio will release "¡Uno!," "¡Dos!" and "¡Tré!," over the course of four months, with the first installment coming Sept. 25.
You thought recording a rock opera was epic? Try releasing a trilogy of albums in the span of four months! Green Day has announced the release of three -- yes, three -- new albums, titled "¡Uno!," "¡Dos!" and "¡Tré!," to follow up their 2009 album, "21st Century Breakdown."
The veteran pop-punk trio will issue the first album on Sept. 25, the second on Nov. 13, and the third on Jan. 15, 2013, all through longtime label Reprise Records. According to a press release, Green Day is still finishing up the albums on Oakland, Calif. with producer Rob Cavallo.
"We are at the most prolific and creative time in our lives. This is the best music we've ever written, and the songs just keep coming," says the band in a statement. "Instead of making one album, we are making a three album trilogy. Every song has the power and energy that represents Green Day on all emotional levels. We just can't help ourselves... We are going epic as fuck!"
With the upcoming album trilogy, Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool are continuing to lead the band -- which started out writing three-minute punk blasts about boredom and drugs -- into ambitious new directions. "21st Century Breakdown," Green Day's eighth studio album which has sold 1 million copies according to Nielsen SoundScan, was an 18-song, 70-minute effort divided into three "Acts"; before that, their 2004 opus "American Idiot," which won a Grammy for Best Rock Album and inspired a best-selling Broadway musical of the same name, included a pair of five-part song suites and reenergized the group's aesthetic.
In May 2011, Armstrong announced that the band had a "ton of new songs" in the works, and the group performed a handful of unfamiliar cuts at a secret California show last August. On Feb. 14, Armstrong posted on Twitter, ""Happy Valantine's day! Officially started recording the new record today. It's F**K TIME!!!!"
Green Day has lined up five overseas appearances for the summer, beginning on Aug. 18 at Summer Sonic 2012 in Tokyo. Before that, the band will induct Guns N' Roses into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Apr. 14.
