Gronemeyer to compose for Corbijn thriller

George Clooney to star in 'The American'

COLOGNE, Germany -- German pop star and occasional actor Herbert Gronemeyer ("Das Boot") has signed on to compose the soundtrack for Anton Corbijn's upcoming thriller "The American" starring George Clooney.

Gronemeyer, a multi-platinum selling recording artist, is a close friend and neighbor of the Dutch director, who shot a number of his music videos. Gronemeyer also helped bankroll Corbijn's low-budget debut, "Control" (2007) and appeared in a small walk-on role.

On his blog for the film, Corbijn said Gronemeyer already had "3 nearly finished pieces" for the movie, in which Clooney plays a world-weary assassin on a final fateful job.

Focus Features are set to bow "The American" in the U.S. Sept. 1. Tobis Film has German rights and is planning a Sept. 30 release here.
