GSN, Bernsen buzz in with 'How Much'
EmptyGSN is moving forward with a new Corbin Bernsen-hosted game show for primetime titled "How Much Is Enough?" from BBC Worldwide America.
The network has ordered 40 half-hour episodes of the series, which marks Bernsen's debut as a game show host. The show, which features four contestants competing against a "Money Clock" to win the most cash without being the greediest, premieres Jan. 8 and will air at 9 p.m. ET Tuesday-Saturday.
The game begins with five "Money Clocks" ranging in value from $1,000-$5,000. The players secretly buzz in each round as the amount of money is shown on the clock in an attempt to capture the second-highest amount of money each time as the "greediest" player gets nothing. After five rounds, the two players with the most money move on to the "Final Face-Off," in which the "Money Clock" counts upward, starting from zero. The first player to buzz in wins that amount of cash on the clock, and the greedier player goes home empty-handed.
GSN senior vp programming Jamie Roberts said network execs "instantly responded" to the idea when BBC Worldwide America pitched it.
"It was so different and fresh, and we knew we wanted to get involved with it," he said. "The format is clean, simple and very straightforward, but it has surprising layers, and it takes real strategy to play it. This is going to be a network-defining show."
"How Much," executive produced by Stephen Brown, marks the first series produced for GSN by BBC Worldwide America, whose credits include ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" and the upcoming series "Dance War," also for ABC, and "Clash of the Choirs" for NBC.
"GSN is a fantastic partner for us," said Paul Telegdy, the company's executive vp content and production. "We share similar creative values, and we speak each other's language."
"How Much" is the first format to be developed entirely in-house at BBC Worldwide by the new format development team headed by Ben Hall, head of format development at BBC Worldwide's U.K. headquarters. The company is looking to distribute the format globally as well.
Roberts added that GSN had already had conversations with Bernsen about potentially hosting a game show, and when "How Much" came along, it seemed like a perfect fit.
Added Bernsen: "I have always been a big fan of game shows, and I have been tuning in to GSN for years."
Bernsen also co-stars on the USA Network series "Psych" and is president and CEO of Publicmediaworks, a media company that develops "tailor made" entertainment content for multiple platforms.
