The director will be honored at the annual trade expo in Barcelona later this month.

Two years after his $400 million-plus earning monster smash Pacific Rim was unveiled to exhibitors at CineEurope, Europe's premiere cinema trade expo, Guillermo del Toro is set to receive its International Filmmaker of the Year award.

The honor will be presented as part of a Universal Pictures lunch, hinting that his upcoming horror project Crimson Peak, due out in October, could feature heavily in the studio's presentation. Fox has already acknowledged that new footage from Kung Fu Panda 3 — which del Toro exec produced — will be shown during its show.

“Guillermo del Toro is an iconic filmmaker with an inimitable style and vision,” said Duncan Clark, president of Universal Pictures International. “His ability to craft a gothic romance like Legendary’s Crimson Peak is unparalleled, and we all continue to remain transfixed by his visually stunning and haunting films.”

Andrew Sunshine, co-managing director of CineEurope, said that del Toro's ability to relate with the world's movie-going public was a "true gift."

CineEurope will take place from June 22-25 at the Centre Convencions Internacional Barcelona.
