'Hall Pass' Tops Friday Box Office, Expected to Slip Over Weekend
Nicolas Cage action pic "Drive Angry" bombs, "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never Director’s Fan Cut" sparks repeat business.
The Farrelly brothers’ R-rated comedy Hall Pass opened to a soft $4.6 million on Friday, and will likely be beat by holdovers Gnomeo & Juliet and Unknown for the weekend.
Nicolas Cage action pic Drive Angry 3D, the weekend’s other new offering, saw a dismal opening, grossing an estimated $1.6 million to come in No. 9 for the day and likely for the weekend. Summit Entertainment is distributing Drive Angry in the U.S. for Nu Image/Millennium.
The good news at the Friday box office was the strength of Paramount’s Justin Bieber: Never Say Never Director’s Fan Cut, which succeeded in sparking repeat business. The movie -- coming in No. 6 -- dropped only 29% to an estimated $2.7 million, and should gross at least $7.5 million for the weekend.
Box office observers are betting on Disney’s Gnomeo to win the full weekend with a gross of $13 million or $14 million. The 3D toon grossed an estimated $3.2 million on Friday for a cume of $64.1 million. Film came in No. 4 on Friday, but traffic will pick up Saturday.
Coming in No. 2 on Friday was Warner Bros. and Dark Castle’s Unknown, which grossed an estimated $3.9 million for a cume of $34.3 in its first eight days. Unknown has a strong shot at beating Hall Pass for the weekend, and could even vie for No. 1 with Gnomeo.
Warner Bros. also is distributing Hall Pass, a New Line title.
Sony’s Adam Sandler-Jennifer Aniston comedy Just Go With It continues to hold well, grossing an estimated $3.3 million on Friday to place No. 3 behind Hall Pass and Unknown. Cume is $71.5 million.
Placing No. 5 was DreamWorks and Disney’s I Am Number Four, which grossed an estimated $3.1 million on its second Friday for a cume of $29.8 million.
With the Academy Awards set for Sunday night, awards frontrunner The King’s Speech saw a nice uptick in business. The historical drama was up 27% from the previous Friday, grossing an estimated $1.9 million for a cume of $108.8 million.
