Billboard Music Awards: Halsey Performs New Single After "Closer" Era Ends

This was the singer’s first television performance of her new single.

Halsey brought the sparkles and flowers for the performance of her new single, “Now or Never,” at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night.

Dressed in a sparkly white ensemble embellished with colorful flowers and shining gloves, Halsey performed the dance tune with large golden frames and candles behind her. A large white curtain with flowers served as the stage backdrop. The singer danced around the stage, taking the time to hype up the crowd. Although the stage was embellished with vintage decorations, the performance was kept minimal as no backup dancers or band were visible.

The singer’s Billboard performance marked her first award show performance of her new single, as well as her first solo performance without the Chainsmokers.

For this year’s show, the singer was nominated for seven awards for her collaboration with the Chainsmokers for their dance-infused anthem “Closer.” The collaboration won Top Hot 100 Song and Top Collaboration.

In a recent interview with the Zach Sang Show, the “Now or Never” singer explained how despite being categorized as a pop singer, she considers herself an alternative artist. She mentions how although rapper Kendrick Lamar has features with Maroon 5 and Taylor Swift, he’s never considered a pop artist like herself.

The singer said, “I don’t know if it’s a male thing, I don’t know if it’s an urban thing. I don’t know what it is. But if you’re a female alternative artist and you do anything that’s even slightly pop leaning, it’s condemning.”

The singer has a forthcoming collaboration with Fifth Harmony member Lauren Jauregui.

Of the collab, Halsey said, “I just love that Lauren and I are two women who have a mainstream pop presence doing a love song for the LGBT community.”

The Billboard Music Awards aired live at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT Sunday on ABC from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Vanessa Hudgens and Ludacris hosted. Keep up with all the latest news here.
